"I think it's very important for students to read effectively and to write well, and the best way for them to do that is to read and write a lot. Students are often very nervous about literature because they feel they cannot properly express their thoughts about it, so their hesitation in reading turns into difficulty writing which reinforces that hesitation, and so on. Conversely, reading, writing about that reading, and then talking about that reading and writing is a cumulative process through which students learn to express themselves and engage with the expressions of others on most any topic, familiar or otherwise. I want students to become comfortable, confident, and ultimately enthusiastic about reading, talking about, and learning from books."
