Sledding at the Lower School

If you drove past the Lower School campus last Thursday, you undoubtedly heard loud laughter and saw huge smiles on the faces of the students as they came sledding down the hill by the soccer fields. Throughout the day, students spent their Physical Education class sledding.

The Middle School's Notable Names Festival is profiled in the January 16, 2014 issue of The News Leader. As part of their Technology, Research and Writing enrichment class, our creative 7th graders choose a 20th century event or invention and researched the event and the person instrumental to its creation.

Introducing the 2013 Holiday Basketball Camp! Back by popular demand, this program will allow budding basketball stars the opportunity to perfect skills, build upon fundamentals, and excel in their upcoming basketball seasons. Coached by Stuart Hall School head coaches, this program ensures quality supervision and instruction.

The Upper School Math and Science Emphasis students are hard at work on their Senior Capstone research projects. Ranging from studying the European economy to studying the effects of a high lipid diet on blood chemistry, this year's projects are both varied and deeply interesting.

Research shows that adolescents retain new information much easier if the information is engaging. At Stuart Hall, we provide students with numerous hands-on activities to reinforce what they are learning in the classroom. Field trips are scheduled throughout the school year to offer active learning experiences as well as opportunities for students to interact with one another outside of the classroom.

The Fall Athletic Season for the 2013-14 School Year began with a lot of excitement with 81 Stuart Hall students on a Fall Sport Roster, and an additional 15 participating in alternative athletic activities.  All of our teams had strong seasons last year, and many of our programs have continued to grow and progress.

In our last quarterly newsletter, we announced that our Greenspace Initiative was about to break ground. Now, at the end of the first quarter, we are nearly ready to begin using this fabulous space. With the sod freshly laid, sidewalks paved, upper fields and courts fenced, stage set, lighting installed, and mulch freshly spread, we are ready for a new chapter on the Staunton Campus.

Fourth and fifth grade library classes at the Lower School are discovering what it takes to publish a book.  Each student started by choosing a job--designer, editor, writer, or illustrator--and then small groups were created to write and illustrate fictional short stories.  There are two designers in each class who are working on a website to format the colors, fonts, and layout of each book.

This week, the Staunton campus will see the groundbreaking of our brand-new Greenspace Initiative, a comprehensive project to improve the functionality and aesthetic of the area behind our main building. Beginning in phase one with dining hall, new doors will lead out into a patio and stage where students can enjoy meals, study hall, outdoor performances, or time with friends during warm weather.

Each year, the American Museum of Natural History, in partnership with the Alcoa Foundation, sponsors the Young Naturalist Award. This research-based science competition is for students in grades 7 – 12. The competition is designed to promote participation and communication in science.
